Dress Code Policy

Section 4.2 of the DLSU Student Handbook 2009-2012 states, “The University recognizes the right of students to come to school dressed according to their individual taste. However, they are encouraged to use attires that consider the educational character of the University and the sensibility of other members of the academic community. Dressing appropriately is a virtue which the University would like to cultivate among students, thus the University reserves the right to call the attention of students who dress inappropriately.”

Given the Catholic nature of De La Salle University, Lasallian students are encouraged to practice the values of respect for one’s self, decency, and appropriateness through their campus attire. The University also sees itself as the training ground for the student’s professional career, where certain standards of dressing are required for employment.

Thus, the following guidelines on campus attire form part of a student’s wholistic Lasallian educational experience:

1. Campus attire should be decent and modest. Some extremes are not acceptable, including:
a)    tube blouse (including spaghetti-strap) worn without vest / bolero,
b)    backless blouse / shirt (below the bust-line),
c)    sando,
d)    blouse with plunging neckline,
e)    see-through tops and/or bottoms where the undergarment can be seen,
f)    blouse / shirt showing midsection while standing / walking

2.    Shorts may be worn on campus, however the hemline of shorts and skirts should not be higher than three (3) inches above the knee-cap. In addition, P.E. / sports / athletic shorts may not be worn inside classrooms / seminar rooms / auditorium.

3.    As a sign of respect, caps should not be worn inside classrooms / seminar rooms / auditorium.

4.   On hair dye, students should not sport extreme hair colors (i.e. red, purple, blue).

5.    On body piercing, piercing on any part of the head, except ears, is not allowed.

6.    Open-toe footwear should have either a back-strap / sling-back or a heel of at least 1 inch.

7.    Clothing with pictures and/or statements that are contrary to the mission and the Catholic nature of De La Salle University is prohibited.

8.    Faculty members may require their own in-class dress code policy provided that it is related, necessary, and reasonably relevant to their classes. This includes, but not limited to, the following cases:
a) wearing of appropriate attire in laboratory classes and P.E. uniform for P.E. classes
b) wearing of business attire during reports and other important class activities

Part of the formation that the University would like the students to recognize is that they have to be responsible for their actions, and as such, should understand that there are consequences for non-compliance with the rules and regulations set forth by the University. The sanctions for non-compliance of the Dress Code Policy are as follows:
1st infraction: written warning
2nd and succeeding infractions: minor offense

*As agreed upon by the Student Handbook Revision Committee (Student Handbook 2009-2012), the provisions of the Implementing Guidelines will be reviewed after one schoolyear of its implementation.
